Welcome to Fair Share.
Fair Share is a unit of the School of
Government, at the University of the Western Cape. Within the School of
Government’s broad vision of fostering democratic and effective
governance, Fair Share, works primarily within communities to assist
civil society organisations to participate in municipal governance. The
focus of our work is to strengthen the capacity of communities to
participate effectively in municipal planning and budgeting
processes.
Since it inception, Fair Share has developed and implemented various
programmes designed to strengthen the participation of community
organisations in municipal processes. Through its two main programmes,
i.e. Higher Certificate in Economic Development, the Local Government
Partnership Programme, Fair Share has undertaken many capacity building
interventions for communities, community organisations, ward
committees, municipal councillors, municipal officials and broad range
of non-governmental organisations.
Fair Share is well known for its work on economic literacy, national
and local budgets. In the past 10 years we have worked with communities
in Limpopo, North West, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape, Western Cape,
Gauteng, Free State and Eastern Cape provinces.

To contribute to effective, accountable and democratic governance
responsive to the needs of marginalised people.
Mission
Fair Share, a unit of the School of Government, University of the
Western Cape, strives to build the capacity of communities to
participate effectively in democratic governance, by assisting in the
training and development of leadership.
